Michaela: My master’s thesis took me to Milan
Report on my ERASMUS Semester in Milano

My master’s thesis took me to Milan, where I spent my Erasmus semester at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca). This modern university, located in the northern part of Milan, is known for its research-oriented profile and offers a wide range of study programs in fields such as education, science, economics, and social sciences. I was enrolled in the Faculty of Education, which gave me the opportunity to explore innovative teaching methods and approaches. The academic work was demanding yet highly rewarding, as the university places strong emphasis on interactive learning formats that encourage critical thinking and active participation.
I lived in an apartment shared with two other international students. Living in such an international environment not only offered valuable intercultural experiences but also strengthened my social and organizational skills. Shared meals and discussions about cultural traditions provided me with new perspectives and broadened my understanding of cultural diversity. At the same time, life in the shared apartment required communication skills, cooperation, and responsibility, for instance in organizing household tasks or dealing with cultural differences. The location of the apartment was very convenient, being close to public transport, supermarkets, and cafés, which made it easy to reach both the university and the city.
Life in Milan itself was characterized by a particular dynamism. The city offers not only a rich historical and cultural heritage, with landmarks such as the Milan Cathedral, La Scala opera house, and the Sforza Castle, but also a vibrant social environment including markets, festivals, art exhibitions, and concerts. Daily encounters in cafés, at markets, or at the university also allowed me to continuously improve my Italian language skills and gain confidence in using the language through direct interaction with locals.
From an academic perspective, the semester at the University of Milano-Bicocca proved to be highly enriching. At the same time, the stay led to a deep cultural immersion that significantly enhanced my awareness of cultural diversity and my sensitivity in dealing with different life contexts. These experiences are of great importance for educational work, as they strengthen the understanding of the challenges and opportunities of multicultural learning environments.
In retrospect, my Erasmus semester in Milan was a formative experience that contributed significantly to my development on both academic and personal levels. Engaging with innovative teaching methods, immersing myself in the cultural and linguistic environment, and building international connections have all strengthened my competencies as a future educator and broadened my perspective on global education processes.
