Hannah: My semester at Universitat de Barcelona

During my semester abroad, I had the opportunity to study at the Universitat de Barcelona. I was enrolled in a selection of courses that were all conducted in English, which brought together both Erasmus students and local participants. The courses focused strongly on didactics and language learning, and I was able to deepen my understanding of how languages can be taught effectively in primary education. These insights will be highly valuable for my future career as a primary school teacher.

In addition to my university classes, I completed a three-week internship at a Catalan school in Barcelona. From the very first day, I felt warmly welcomed and well supported by the teachers. The professors and staff showed great kindness and created an environment in which I felt secure and included. I was mainly placed in English classes, which gave me the chance to observe different teaching strategies and participate actively in the lessons. What impressed me most was how much the school involved me:
I was not only invited to attend regular lessons but also took part in several projects, excursions, and even meetings, where my opinion was valued. This gave me a deep insight into the school’s culture and everyday routines.

Before the internship, I attended a two-week Catalan language course at the university, which gave me a good foundation. Although I was not able to communicate fluently with all students and colleagues, I understood the basics well enough to follow the general context of conversations and lessons. This also allowed me to support the pupils at times, for example by translating individual words or identifying the topic being discussed. Having this basic knowledge of Catalan made me feel more integrated and gave me a deeper appreciation of the importance of language learning.

Beyond my academic and professional activities, living in Barcelona was an unforgettable experience. The city is full of energy, diversity, and opportunities to discover new things. From its impressive architecture to the beaches where we could play volleyball, from lively festivals to cozy cafés, Barcelona always offered something inspiring. I particularly appreciated the openness and hospitality of the people, who were always willing to share their culture and traditions with us international students. There were also numerous events and activities for Erasmus students, which made it easy to connect with people from all over the world. The only real challenge was the high cost of accommodation, but otherwise student life in Barcelona was very affordable, with many budget-friendly activities and free cultural offers.

Looking back, I can confidently say that this semester abroad has been one of the most formative experiences of my studies so far. I grew not only academically but also personally, becoming more independent, adaptable, and self-confident. The combination of university courses, the school internship, and daily life in a foreign city has shaped me in ways that will continue to influence my path as a teacher. The warmth and inclusivity of Spanish and Catalan culture left a strong impression on me, and I returned home with new perspectives, friendships, and skills that I will carry into my professional future.
