My semester abroad in Zwolle, the Netherlands

The University

I had the opportunity to spend my winter semester 2025/26 in Zwolle, the Netherlands. During this time, I studied at Windesheim University of Applied Science and also completed an internship in Dalfsen, which is only a ten-minute train ride from Zwolle.

Windesheim has a large and modern campus offering a wide variety of study programs. What impressed me the most, however, was the teacher-student dynamic. In our very first class, the lecturers shook our hands, asked for our names and wanted to know where we are from. In every following lesson, they genuinely asked how we were feeling, whether everything was going well and encouraged us to approach them anytime if we needed support. This open, respectful and caring atmosphere made studying at Windesheim a very positive experience from me and I truly enjoyed my time at the university.

Through the Erasmus Student Network (ESN), it was very easy to connect with other international student. Especially during the first two weeks, ESN organized multiple events during the week, giving us plenty of opportunities to meet new people and build friendships. Throughout the entire semester, there were many different events to join, which made it easy to stay socially active and connected.

Accomodation

One aspect that should be carefully considered when planning an Erasmus stay in the Netherlands is housing, as the situation is quite challenging. I received confirmation for my room only two weeks before my arrival, which was very nerve-racking. I lived in student housing with a shared kitchen and room, as well as a separate bathroom. While it was not the ideal living situation, it worked out well for the limited time I was there.

The location, however, was perfect. I lived at Talentenplein, which is only a ten-minute walk from the city center and about eight minutes by bike to the university. This made everyday life very convenient.

Zwolle

Zwolle is a small and cozy city, surrounded by star-shaped canal. It has many charming cafés and small shops that invite you to explore. I especially enjoyed going to walks with my friends and spending time in cafés while enjoying coffee and delicious cake.

I also liked the location of Zwolle. The city is only about one hour away from Amsterdam, which allowed us to spend many weekends travelling and discovering other parts of the Netherlands and different countries.

Conclusion

I am very grateful that I was able to spend my Erasmus semester in Zwolle. I met amazing people, made unforgettable memories and gained valuable experiences on a personal level and for my future career as a teacher, that I wouldn’t have made if I didn’t go abroad. This semester in Zwolle will always hold a special place in my heart and has shaped me in many positive ways.
