My Erasmus stay in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

During the winter semester, I completed my Erasmus stay in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as part of my Primary Education degree. From the very beginning, my first impression of the host university was very positive.

The courses I attended were highly practice-oriented and strongly based on group work. I particularly appreciated that students worked in fixed groups over a longer period of time, which closely resembles school structures and fosters cooperation and continuity.
Two lecturers left a lasting impression on me. My teacher in English phonetics taught with great passion and dedication, which was clearly noticeable in every lesson. The same applies to my Spanish teacher in the voluntary A2 course, whose enthusiasm and commitment made learning especially enjoyable.
Unfortunately, it was not possible for me to complete a school practice during my stay abroad. Nevertheless, the practical focus of the courses provided me with valuable didactic and methodological impulses for my future profession as a teacher.
I lived in a shared flat located directly in Mesa y López, a very lively area of Las Palmas. For me, it was mainly a functional shared apartment, which suited my situation well, as it allowed me to meet many new people.
Since I had never lived in a shared flat before, this was a new experience for me. I learned that people have very different standards regarding household organisation, hygiene and daily routines.
Las Palmas itself can be described in three words: joy of life, active and calming at the same time. I especially enjoyed the open and positive attitude of the people and the natural way in which time is taken for friends and family.

A major highlight was the ocean, which is almost right at your doorstep, the very pleasant climate throughout the winter semester and the many tapas bars that enrich everyday life.
During my stay, I had contact with both international students and local residents, which significantly broadened my cultural and social perspective.
I noticed that it has become much easier for me to approach people, switch between languages and adapt to new environments.
I also learned about myself that I am able to feel at home quite quickly in new places, which is certainly due to the wonderful people I met during my time in Las Palmas.
Overall, I am convinced that this Erasmus experience has had a lasting impact on me, both personally and professionally. It strengthened my independence, openness and intercultural competence, which will be highly beneficial for my future work as a teacher. I would strongly recommend a stay abroad to anyone who has the opportunity to do so.
