Updated EU Guidelines for teachers: Digital Literacy & Disinformation (2026)

The Guidelines for teachers and educators on tackling disinformation and promoting digital literacy (updated in 2026 by the European Commission) focus on one of the biggest challenges today: how to help students navigate fake news, social media, and online information in a critical way.

They are designed for teachers at all levels and offer practical support for the classroom. Instead of just theory, the publication gives concrete ideas and strategies that educators can actually use in their lessons. The main goal is to help students develop digital literacy skills and become more aware of how information works online.

The guide includes:

  • Clear explanations of how disinformation spreads
  • Tips on teaching critical thinking and media literacy
  • Activities and lesson ideas you can adapt to your subject
  • “Deep dives” into topics like social media, influencers, and AI tools
  • Approaches such as prebunking (helping students recognize misinformation before they encounter it)

Modern students grow up in a digital world where information is everywhere, but not all of it is reliable. These guidelines highlight how important it is for schools to help learners become informed, responsible, and critical users of digital media.
